Solutions to Control Cat Allergies

The majority of cats experience allergies, and often as a result, have pretty bad itchy and scratchy skin. These allergies also often cause digestion problems for the cat as well. There are many claimed solutions, and may work for some, but as a whole many of the so called “cures” have little lasting effect.

The problem with most approaches is that it masks the problem but does not cure it. Cat allergies are perhaps more complicated than even our allergies.

In fact over 75% of all cats have allergies that cause them pain either externally (skin, fur, paws, eyes) or internally (digestion, constipation, gas, etc.) The first thing to determine is what are the problems your cat is experiencing. This should not be all that hard as external issues are easy to see. If the cat has a digestive issue he or she will alert you to it over a short amount of time. Also a vet can detect internal issues. Regardless the best approach is to cure the problem and not simply try to treat it.

So what are the options? Let’s start with external: A very high quality shampoo for cats will go a very long way! A brand name shampoo for cats (or a brand name type) will cause more harm than good. So the first thing to do is to use a non brand name shampoo and switch to a high quality soothing cat shampoo. Lotions and sprays also help with the discomfort.

Sometimes cat enzymes also help. There are a few types of enzymes, tablet form and liquid form – the choice is yours. The good thing about these is that you do not need to get them from a vet. On caution, as with the shampoo stay away from the brand name products as they contain fillers and preventatives; and are generally inferior to other products.

Internal digestive problems also respond very well to enzymes. Almost all cat owners who provide enzymes to their cats see long lasting results. Once the problem is corrected smaller amounts of enzymes can be given. Don’t worry about being to exact as enzymes are all natural and quite good for the cat. In fact, they should be given to all cats as a natural supplement as it will help them stay healthy and happier longer.

We hope this article helps shed some light on helping your cat!
